The fairly small city of El Paso contains many small communities filled with different cultures, styles, and personalities. These communities bring people together in some sort of way no matter how different they may be from each other. To me, a community is more than just a group of people gathered or communicating with one another. Community is being able to come together and connect with the people around us whether if it’s through food, concerts, or sports. The communities in El Paso come together in many ways such as the Lighting of the Christmas
Tree, the Breast Cancer Walks, and more. However, the Farmers Market help downtown nearby the Union Plaza is a great example of the community coming together.
Communities often bring people together that don’t necessarily have a lot in common. For instance, my sister and I possess different personality traits that keep us from relating from another.
Of course, we relate to family issues and culture, but we hold certain qualities that are unlike each other’s. She is the type of person that enjoys watching sports and staying at home to play video games. My sister plays around a lot and is hardly ever serious. I, on the other hand, like to spend my time taking pictures and watching Netflix. Not only that, but I am a teenager who lives in a completely different world compared to my sister who is twenty-six years old. However, every week I spend time with her on Saturday mornings and that is when I get to connect with her the most. The both of us have gone through many harsh family issues that took a toll on the both us but going with her on
Saturday mornings to the Farmers Market reassures me. She introduced me to a community where the both of us can see eye to eye on things and meet new people. The Farmers Market consists of many carts and tables in one street that promotes a variety of small local businesses. Every person that owns these businesses have their own stories on how the Farmers Market brought them closer to the community.
An older man who makes objects out of steel has his own story. He used to work in manufacturing but had a stroke when he was in his late 40’s. Since the stroke affected the right side of his body, he began to create these unique objects to keep him going. One of the mesmerizing objects he has made is a golden train with small details on the surface. He told my sister and I that creating this art and selling them at the Farmers Market helped him become closer to the community. He truly loves what the community offers and how well everyone connects with one another.

I’m glad my sister introduced me to the community because I got to see a new side of El Paso where the people share different hobbies, yet they could relate to one another. The Farmers Market attracts all kinds of people: families, teenagers, and even elders. I highly encourage you to go out and attend the farmers market. Follow their account on Instagram @epdfam for more information. Although it’s only on one small street, the closeness of the community sure does feel strong there.
